  1. Rebates on Energy Star Ice Machines

    ENERGY STARWe’ve talked about ENERGY STAR requirements for ice machines in the past. We didn’t really touch on one of the biggest up-front benefits that you’ll receive for going with an ENERGY STAR certified ice machine in your restaurant, hospital, institution, or office: you can get money back.

    That’s right, there are real rebates given to you from ENERGY STAR for choosing to purchase machines that are compliant. That makes it even easier for you to go green and conserve water and power. There are only a few things which you must do in order to be compliant with the program and receive your rebate.

    • You must be replacing a non-ENERGY STAR machine with a certified machine.

    • The rebate will not exceed the price of the item.

    • The rebate must be applied for within 90 days of purchase.

    There are other qualifications and requirements that you must meet before you receive the excellent rebates. Just take a look, and you will be amazed at how many rebates that you might qualify for – as the ENERGY STAR label is fairly ubiquitous within our listings of ice machines.

    The best thing to do with your ENERGY STAR Certified ice machine is to make sure that it’s running in optimal conditions at all times. Make sure that it receives regular maintenance and that you follow the owner’s manual to the letter. That way, you can keep your ice machine giving and giving throughout the years.   

  2. ENERGY STAR and Easy Cleaning - The Scotsman CU3030MA-1

    Full Cube Made by HISU Undercounter Ice Machines Energy conservation is a crucial topic for any restaurant or bar that wants to maximize their profits. The more ice you can make for any given quantity of electricity and water, the better, right? The ENERGY STAR program is a good place to start looking for an energy efficient ice machine. To get an ENERGY STAR label, a machine has to undergo rigorous testing to check its resource consumption.

    Here’s an example of one of our ENERGY STAR-compliant machines. The Scotsman CU3030MA-1 is an air-cooled undercounter ice machine that can pump out quite a lot of ice. The machine can make 250 pounds every 24 hours and can hold 110 pounds in its integrated storage bin. It has a self-contained air-cooled condenser. And it’s ENERGY STAR Certified. The machine uses a mere 18 gallons of water and 8.5 kWh of electricity to make 100 pounds of ice.

    It also has user-friendly features. It has auto-alert indicator lights to tell users when something is wrong. The top lid and door remove quickly for easy cleaning. It also uses Scotsman’s WaterSense technology to purge water after every freezing cycle.

    This small machine is excellent for anyone that needs a lot of ice on a small footprint.

  3. The Car Wash of Dishwashers: The Conveyor Dishwasher

    champion dishwasher Dishwashers come in all shapes and sizes for commercial settings, but one type stands out if you need a constant stream of clean. That type is the conveyor dishwasher. Think of it like a car wash for dishes. Dirty racks go on one end, clean dishes come out the other ready for reuse.

    Some units are quite small, while others are very large. The size you’ll need depends on how many racks per hour you need to wash and whether you want additional components like a booster heater or a drying unit. One of our smaller units, the Fagor FL-200W-NB, can wash up to 150 racks per hour and is insulated for sound so it can be used in larger bars and restaurants. However, it does not have a booster heater.

    A much higher-end model is the Champion 80 DRHDPW Energy Star unit. This system can wash 208 racks per hour. It has a prewash unit, a dual-stage rinse, and energy features to reduce the costs of the unit like its own hot water heater and automatic shutoff valves. There’s also a booster heater built in made of stainless steel.

  4. The Bartender's Friend: Fagor Undercounter Dishwasher

    We recently had a real treat: an opportunity to stay at one of the hotels in the area.  Being a supplier to the restaurant business, we can’t help but notice how people run their bars, restaurants, and other food service areas. 

    Since it was a trip for pleasure, we didn’t ask for a tour behind the scenes. What we did notice, however, was that on the Friday night that we went to the hotel bar, he was the busiest man in the house.  He was taking care of folks for the playoff games, fielding questions from patrons, and simultaneously mixing drinks.  Another thing we noticed was that there was a huge pile of glasses piling up in his 3-area undercounter sink.

    Fagor Undercounter Dishwasher For that kind of volume, our friendly bartender might have benefited from a Fagor AD-21W Undercounter Glass Washer.  These machines do around 22 racks an hour, using .65 gallons of water for each run – much less than the undercounter sink.

    The Fagor Undercounter Glass Washer also has an attached booster heater, meaning that our wonderful bartender wouldn’t have to worry about sanitization and burning his hands in the process (something nobody, much less bartenders, wants to do). Since he was handling some of the dinner dishes that were coming back from the bar’s patrons, he could have loaded those into the warewasher as well. He might have been enamored by the fact that washing dishes would only take a couple of minutes. Also, the noise level isn’t too bad to drown out the sound of the patrons.

    Now, we’re not sure why our bartender didn’t have a Fagor undercounter dishwasher, but we imagine that there was a great reason.  He was definitely as efficient as his equipment would let him… now if only he could have done something about the $10 margarita! 

  5. New Climate Regulations for Commercial Ice Machines

    Climate Change Skyline Commercial ice machines were the focus for energy regulators this week as President Obama’s Climate Action plan zeroed in on efficiency standards for automatic commercial ice makers.  It’s part of the nationwide effort to regulate energy efficiency standards for consumer goods.

    “The Energy Department is committed to building on this progress, and will continue to develop standards that move the US closer to a low-carbon future,” says Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.

    The move will save $600 million for consumers in the next thirty years.  It will also reduce carbon emissions by 4 million metric tons.  The new rules are set to save consumers nearly $80 billion by the year 2080. 

    The regulations that have been put into place regarding ice makers mean that there are water and energy standards that manufacturers must match with their ice machines.

    Feds Tighten Regulations on Hotel Ice Makers to Fight Global Warming

    What this type of regulation means for restaurants, hotels, and convenience stores is that they should expect to have significant energy and water savings when they purchase new ice machines. 

    When you’re looking for a new ice machine, try to find one that has the ENERGY STAR label.  ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program that reduces carbon emissions. By buying ENERGY STAR products, you’ll be within the new guidelines.

  6. ENERGY STAR Dishwashers

    According to the EPA, restaurants use the most water through dishwashing.  It makes sense. Restaurants have a constant stream of dishes in and dishes out. The biggest place where a restaurant can save energy and water on dishwashing comes in the choice of the equipment. 

    Several dishwashers, including ones from Jet Tech, Fagor, and CMA Dishmachines are able to use the ENERGY STAR certification.  These machines are proven to have more of an eye toward both water and energy efficiency.  Each of them has risen up to the standards of the EPA and the ENERGY STAR criteria.

    Some of these are undercounter dishwashers, some of them are upright dishwashers, and others are hybrid dishwashers that will wash nearly anything that you throw at it.  Undercounter dishwashers are great for the front of house when you just need a little extra, while the others offer a little bit of oomph in the back of the house.

    We’ve been talking all week about ENERGY STAR and the major brands of ice machines that meet the standards.  You can definitely save a little dough on your bills when you choose ENERGY STAR certified models, as they represent the most energy and water efficient machines in the industry.  Hoshizaki ice machines was declared the ENERGY STAR partner of the year, a sign of their dedication to energy savings. The air-cooled ones are going to be to your best benefit when it comes to energy efficiency, as many of the water-cooled ones cost a bit more and use a LOT of water.

    You’ll find that with some of the smaller designs that they’re able to fit easily under bars and counters. The machines which have the ‘U’ designation in their names are undercounter ice machines offered by Ice-O-Matic.

    The undercounter machines store enough to satisfy over 20 bar patrons. For most bars, that ensures there will be plenty of ice available for thirsty customers. Not only do these machines have others beat in the convenience category, but they also save money for the bar in energy and water.

    The ice machine bins on the undercounter machines also have the distinction of having antimicrobial surfaces. They resist the formation of scale and hinder the growth of bacteria, meaning that there’s less time spent on cleaning and more time serving.

  9. Manitowoc Ice Machines and ENERGY STAR

    The cube ice machine is the standard ice machine type for restaurants, self-service convenience stores, and more.  Yesterday, we talked about the Scotsman ice makers that make cube and half cube ice.  Today, we’re going to talk about Manitowoc cube ice machines that are ENERGY STAR certified. 

    There are more ice makers from Manitowoc that are ENERGY STAR certified than the ones from Scotsman, primarily because each one of the models has a full cube and half cube option.  There are also some, designated with IR, that have ‘regular’ cubes.

    We’re still getting closer to perfect as far as the efficiency is concerned, something which ice machine makers like Manitowoc battle with in their R&D departments every single day.  If you’re looking for a very energy-efficient ice machine, Manitowoc is a good choice.

  10. ENERGY STAR and Scotsman Ice Cubers

     

    The ENERGY STAR label was devised to help people and businesses reduce their carbon emissions.  It started out with just a few types of appliances but now there are certifications for many, including ice machines. Ice machines are measured both in energy usage and in water usages.

    One would think that the water that goes into the production of ice would be a 1 to 1 correlation.  You should be able to put a pound of water into the machine and receive a pound of ice.  That, unfortunately, is not the case. In some instances, the machine might be working at only 40% efficiency (and sometimes lower!).  

    Ice machine production is measured in pounds, which means that to make 100 pounds of ice, you would need to have 12 gallons of water (each gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds).  To earn the ENERGY STAR rating, the production needs to be very close to that number.  Here are some of the Scotsman ice makers that have earned the ENERGY STAR certification.

    The ENERGY STAR certified Scotsman ice makers that are listed here are the cuber kind.  The cube and the half cubes are the most basic of ice – the type that you’ll see in restaurants, convenience stores, and all parts in between. Most nugget or flake machines need extra water to operate, making them ineligible for certification.  We’re going to talk about the cubers from some of the other companies tomorrow.  Stay tuned!
