Outdoor Ice Maker

  1. Outdoor Ice Machines

Ice machines don’t have to be relegated to being trapped inside in the recesses of kitchens, at the end of the hall in hotels, or tucked away in hospitals.  They can be out in the open, front and center at luaus, barbeques, and other outdoor events.

One of our small ice machines, the GEMU090 by Ice-O-Matic, delivers enough pearl ice to keep plenty of outdoor party goers happy.  There are, however, some guidelines which must be observed when using an outdoor ice machine to make sure it can deliver the goods.

    Be Careful About Operating Temperatures

If the machine gets hotter than the temperatures prescribed in the operations manual, the machine might not operate at its optimum efficiency. It’s actually more dangerous to operate them in cold temperatures. If the machine is allowed to freeze on the outside, damage can happen to the whole unit.

    Make Sure Water Doesn’t Accumulate

There are many people out there who believe that just because it can handle being outside that it’s like a superman of ice machines.  Unfortunately, the GEMU090 ice machine can’t operate in standing water, as it will serve well to damage the parts. Careful putting it on a bar with a patron that likes to spill drinks, or where one push could put it into the bar sink.

    Keep the Water Lines Short

Getting all ‘countryfied’ and running a long water line across the patio and through the neighbor’s yard will only serve to damage the ice production of your small ice maker if you’re making ice on a sunny day. The sun will make the water hot in the line and force the machine to work harder.

    Be Smart About Drainage

Don’t drain your ice machine into the pool, the toilet, onto the grounds, or some other jury-rigged way.  Yes, the outdoor ice machine is going to need some drainage.  No, the kiddy pool is not the place to do it.  There are better ways to drain your ice machine.

Out of Season? Bring it Indoors

If the time for outdoor ice parties is done, then it’s time to bring the GEMU090 inside.  That pearl ice can be used for patrons in so many other places.   Pearl ice is welcome anywhere – there are plenty of creative uses for it, enough so the machine doesn’t have to lay dormant during winter months.

  2. Need an Ice Maker in Your Home? Consider the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090

With the holidays in the rearview, now is a great time to consider some household repairs or additions that could benefit you in the future. You can finally start thinking about improving the patio or pool area by adding a machine that creates the country’s favorite ice. Maybe your refrigerator ran out of ice during your New Year’s Eve party, and you had to leave and scramble to find a store that hadn’t yet shut for the year. Or worse, maybe your guests were left without ice for the remainder of the evening. Maybe you simply love chewing on ice, and are partial to the chewable nuggets that can seemingly only be found or bought at the local quick serve restaurant.

Thankfully, many of your ice related issues can be solved by one simple, undercounter ice maker – the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090. Need up to 85 pounds of ice produced every day? The GEMU090 can help. Want to assure that you have ice on hand for parties, special occasions, or social get-togethers? The GEMU090 stores 22 pounds when filled to capacity and the ice can be easily scooped and bagged for use at a later time. Maybe you just don’t feel like your patio or pool area is complete without an outdoor bar. Well, the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 is one of the only ice makers available that is also approved for outdoor use. If spatial restrictions are a concern, it is worth noting that the GEMU090 measures less than 15 inches wide. This Ice-O-Matic ice maker is one of the slimmest models around and, as it can produce nearly 100 pounds of ice per day, it is incredibly efficient with its use of space.

The Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 has enjoyed immense popularity over the past few years, but this ice maker did not reach the pinnacle of its notoriety until Scotsman Ice Systems retired their NU130 from operation. The NU130 was easily Scotsman’s most popular undercounter ice maker, creating the popular nugget ice that was once strictly available at fast food chains like Sonic Drive-in and Zaxby’s, among others. Scotsman however, decided to retire the NU130 from its production line and turned their focus to a residential-grade undercounter ice maker - the Brilliance Series. With that change, the GEMU090 from Ice-O-Matic quickly became the most sought after undercounter nugget ice maker for both commercial and residential applications. It’s not all bad news for Scotsman though, since Ice-O-Matic is a subsidiary of Scotsman Industries.

Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 nugget ice maker for residential use

Despite the GEMU090’s listing as a commercial ice maker, it is well-equipped to operate in a residential environment. The GEMU090 requires simply a 115-volt wall outlet as a power source, and a floor drain to purge itself of excess water. If a floor drain is not readily available, you can add a pump kit that will help remove any excessive ice melt from the unit. The aforementioned size is also much smaller than that of a typical undercounter commercial ice maker. Like many commercial appliances, the GEMU090 is constructed entirely of stainless steel. Stainless steel is favorable due to its durability, and sleek, stylish aesthetic appeal. This allows the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 to fit in amongst modern appliances of a residential kitchen. Unlike other undercounter ice makers however, the GEMU090 does not have the ability to be fixed with an overlay kit.

A commercial undercounter ice maker like Ice-O-Matic's GEMU090 provides an additional benefit in terms of warranty as well. Most residential ice makers offer a one year warranty, because they are not constructed as soundly as commercial ice makers. The GEMU090 is covered by a two year warranty on the entire unit. Scotsman’s residential Brilliance nugget ice maker is covered by a more limited, one year warranty, and in terms of price, the GEMU090 is nearly $1,000.00 less expensive (compare the GEMU090 at $1,989.99 at IceMachinesPlus to the SCN60PA1SS at $2,956.99 at Amazon). While these ice makers produce and store identical amounts of ice, the GEMU090 costs much less, is more durable and better constructed, and is covered by twice the warranty. Despite the “commercial” tag, Ice-O-Matic’s GEMU090 is a far better fit for those that desire an in ice maker in their home.

For more information about the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090, do not hesitate to give us a call. If you are looking for an ice machine for your business, or a smaller, residential unit, our Ice Experts are here to assist.

  3. With the Scotsman CU50, Less is More

Woman in Hammock Reading By PoolYou know those warm summer weekends where everything seems to fall perfectly into place? The yardwork is finally done, the shade trees are in full bloom, and the kids have been shipped off to camp for the week. All of a sudden, you find the time to stir up a conversation with old friends, or find yourself relaxing in the sun in your hammock, on the patio, or by the pool. What could sour this moment? If, by the time you make your way from your ice maker to your lounge chair, your ice cubes have succumb to the warm air, and melted away in your glass, leaving you with a watered down, less than desirable beverage.

On warmer days, it can be difficult for certain ice cubes to survive in your glass for a long period of time. You may find yourself cramming glasses full of cubes fresh from your current ice maker or freezer, but that rarely seems to suffice as there is little room left for additional liquid to be added. There is one ice maker however, that provides adequate cooling while using fewer ice cubes! That would be the CU50 from Scotsman – a compact undercounter ice maker that makes solid, pure, gourmet ice cubes. Conveniently, the CU50 has also been approved for outdoor use as well.

Instead of overloading your beverage with low quality ice cubes, why not go with the ice maker that provides the highest quality ice? With gourmet ice cubes, you need only two to four cubes in a 12 ounce glass to keep your beverage cool for hours. When you first see these ice cubes in action, you will be amazed. No longer will you be required to hastily gulp down your beverages for fear that your ice is melting too quickly and tainting the quality of your drink.

Scotsman's CU50 The secret to the high quality ice produced by Scotsman’s CU50 is in the unique way the ice is created. Normal ice makers create ice by slowly freezing water in its liquid form to its solid form on a horizontal or vertical evaporator plate. With a gourmet ice maker however, this is not the case. Water is sprayed (almost in a gaseous form) up into a suspended, upside down evaporator plate. Imagine an upside down shot glass, or a bell without the clapper inside, and that is what the plate resembles. Assisted by gravity, heavier sediment and mineral laden water falls back into the water storage area. The purest water freezes on contact and slowly (unfortunately, very slowly) ice begins to form - composed entirely of this pure water. The ice, when heavy enough, then falls into the storage bin of the CU50.

While the Scotsman CU50 makes ice slowly (only around 2.5 pounds per hour), this is not as great a drawback as one may think. Remember, since these ice cubes are oversized, thick, and hard, you do not require as many as you would traditional ice cubes. When filled to capacity, the CU50 stores up to 26 pounds of gourmet ice, so if you leave the ice maker alone for 10 hours, it will refill an empty bin. If you are having a party or hosting an event, you can bag the contents of the ice maker, place the bag in the freezer, and have the ice maker continue making ice. Your ice maker may have to work a little harder in this scenario, but don't worry, the CU50 is Energy Star qualified due to its efficient use of energy and water.

The Scotsman CU50 is listed as a commercial ice maker, and it has found a place in many homes because of its high quality, commercial construction. This undercounter ice maker is built more sturdily than any residential ice maker. It features a better, extended warranty, and can create greater amounts of ice than most residential ice makers. With the CU50, you are not only getting ice, you’re getting the highest quality ice available – no air pockets, microscopic minerals, or sediment - just crystal clear, pure frozen water. However you want to think about it, less is more and quality beats quantity with the gourmet ice produced by the Scotsman CU50.

  4. Complete Your Kitchen Redesign with Four New Appliances

Whether you’re building a new home or simply redesigning your kitchen, there are a few appliances that deserve some consideration due to their quality and the services they provide. Scotsman’s CU50 is one of the best in-home ice makers on the market if you desire high quality, elegant, gourmet ice. U-Line’s beverage centers and refrigerators are a great complement to your personal bar or recreation room, and for the wine aficionado, no home is complete without one of U-Line’s expertly constructed wine captains. The best part about these appliances is that they combine style with functionality, and will fit in (or stand out if you desire) with any existing cabinetry or appliances you may already have in your home.

    Scotsman CU50

Scotsman CU50 Undercounter Gourmet Ice MakerThe Scotsman CU50 allows owners the convenience of having ice of the highest quality available at all times in their own home. Perhaps you’ve had (or have) an ice maker in your refrigerator. This ice is generally cloudy, lower quality, and can adversely affect the flavor of your beverages. Gourmet ice from the CU50 is far superior – composed entirely of water, and free from minerals and sediment. This ice cools drinks effectively without watering them down. If you are a fan of fine spirits and enjoy them on ice, there is no better option than with gourmet style ice. This ice maker from Scotsman creates up to 65 pounds of ice per day and stores 26 pounds, making it a great addition to any home that requires quality ice in smaller quantities. Making the CU50 exceptionally diverse is its ability to operate in an outdoor environment, so you can have ice virtually anywhere it is desired. Very few ice makers are approved for outdoor use (only six at Ice Machines Plus) so this is truly a unique benefit offered by very few. Consider the Scotsman CU50 for reliable ice production of high quality gourmet ice cubes.

The 1075BEV offers 5.5 cubic feet for storage, with two sliding wine racks, two shelves, and floor space for storage. Like many U-Line products, the 1075BEV also features a dual cooling zone, so your contents – though varied – can still be served at their ideal temperatures.  If you have a bar in your home, or simply enjoy a variety of beverages, the 1075BEV can be a great addition. The Scotsman CU50 undercounter ice machine also pairs perfectly with the 1075BEV.

The U-Line 3018WC can be adjusted from 38 to 65 degrees, and makes use of “convectional cooling” which, like convectional ovens, circulates cool air around the entire cabinet, ensuring that there is no temperature fluctuation or discrepancy in the unit, and that all of your wine remains properly stored at all times.

Whether you’re building a house from the ground up, or simply making over the kitchen, these stylish, functional undercounter appliances deserve a good amount of consideration. Each one excels in the service it provides and will add an extra layer of convenience to the room it occupies. Whether you're building a house or redesigning your kitchen, these stylish, functional undercounter appliances are sure to impress your guests and improve the quality of your home.

  5. Buying an Ice Machine for Your Snack Bar

little league snack barWith spring in full bloom, the sound of batted balls, popping mitts, and competitive chatter has filled the majority of baseball and softball diamonds across the country. The beginning of America’s national pastime signifies the end of winter, and the start of longer, warmer days. This also means that it’s time to dust the cobwebs out of the old concession stand, and fire up the grill or griddle for business once again. You may also require a new ice machine for your snack bar so you can serve those delicious, ice cold beverages on hot summer days.

If you run a concession stand or snack bar, the challenges you face are a bit different from those in a commercial restaurant. You may close up shop during the winter, and most of your equipment is probably used seasonally, which could help or hinder its performance depending on how it is stored and cared for. Today however, we focus on finding the proper ice machine for your snack bar, and will provide information on what you should look for when searching for a new snack bar ice machine.

The snack bar ice machine will be used far less than an ice machine in a bar or restaurant. Knowing this, we can assume that the daily ice requirements will be lower as well, and an undercounter ice machine, a countertop ice maker, or a small ice making head and bin should suffice for your ice making purposes. Which type of ice making unit you choose depends largely on the setup of your snack bar, the climate in which you live, and how you wish to serve ice to your customers.

Countertop ice makers are a good idea if you wish to allow your customers uninhibited access to ice. Ice makers like Scotsman’s MDT5N25A are incredibly convenient, as they can make over 500 pounds of nugget ice per day, and are compact enough to sit on any standard counter. They also dispense ice and water, making them a high quality, practical ice maker. If there is a drawback to having the MDT5N25A in your snack bar, it is that ice use is not easily regulated by those running the snack bar, and customers are generally allowed to help themselves to the ice they desire.

Ice-O-Matic ICEU150 Undercounter Ice MakerUndercounter ice makers allow for much greater control over ice consumption, and they require very little space to operate. Ice-O-Matic’s ICEU150 can make up to 150 pounds of cubed ice per day, and requires no more than 24 inches of horizontal space to operate. The ICEU150 stands no taller than 40 inches. Undercounter ice makers, while self-contained and compact, can still provide a good deal of ice making power. Some of the highest producing undercounters can make north of 300 pounds of ice per day. These high production undercounter ice makers all have a bin capacity around 100 pounds. You can read more about high-production undercounter ice makers by following the link provided.

While most snack bars are appropriately housed and are not exposed to the elements, some may be negatively affected by heat or rain. If your snack bar is not air conditioned and located in the south or Midwest, your ice maker may produce ice at a slower pace than an ice maker in a cooler environment. In this case, you may want to consider a small ice making head and bin combination to ensure ice is on hand when needed. Some undercounter ice makers are approved for outdoor use, so if you live in a suitable climate, you may want to consider the outdoor ice makers mentioned here.

Before your snack bar is overwhelmed with thirsty ball players clamoring for ice cold beverages, be sure you are adequately prepared for the rush! Our selection of undercounter ice machines, countertop ice makers, and ice machine and bin combinations is unmatched by anyone on the web. If you’re looking for a quality ice machine or ice maker for your snack bar or concession stand, be sure to consider the variety of options available at Ice Machines Plus.

  6. The Scotsman NU130: One Last Chance!

Scotsman NU130 Undercounter Nugget Ice MakerIf you’ve been looking for Scotsman’s most popular undercounter nugget ice machine lately, you probably haven’t had much success. That’s because Scotsman discontinued production of the NU130 about six months ago. While they have not been producing any new NU130s, Scotsman DID make an interesting discovery while doing some spring cleaning a few days ago- the discovery of a few unsold, untouched NU130s. And Scotsman was good enough to us at Ice Machines Plus to let us offer them for sale on our site. Our quantities are extremely limited (in the single digits), so if you’re looking for an NU130, you’ve got to act as quickly as possible!

The NU130 rose to stardom as Scotsman’s nugget ice increased in popularity. This ice has been around for more than 30 years now, gaining fans in every corner of the ice industry. Nugget ice became popular in hospitals and health care facilities – affectionately being referred to as “hospital ice”. Quick service restaurants like Sonic and Zaxby’s may not have realized how popular nugget ice would become, but when they added nugget ice to their beverages, they found that their popularity increased exponentially. (Note: If you want to see how popular nugget ice is, do a Google or Twitter search for “Sonic Ice”). With Scotsman’s NU130, you can have nugget ice in your own home, office, break room, or café – essentially anywhere you want it.

Scotsman NU130 Inside ViewWhile the Scotsman NU130 was designed to service commercial establishments, it still makes an excellent addition to the home. It was designed with long-lasting commercial quality that is not found in many, lower quality, residential ice machines. The NU130 is small in stature, standing less than 35 inches tall, and no wider than 15 inches. These measurements allow it to fit almost anywhere you require ice, even outside as the NU130 is approved for outdoor use. The NU130 can create up to 125 pounds of nugget ice in a 24 hour period- the most of any undercounter nugget ice maker. This makes the NU130 the most desirable undercounter available (which is why we know our supply will not last).

    Buy Your Scotsman NU130

The Scotsman NU130 will definitely not be around for an extended period of time, and we’re (fairly) certain that there will not be any more miraculous discoveries or hidden troves of this undercounter ice machine found in the future. So if you want an NU130 for your home, office, or business, you must act fast! Check out the NU130 from Scotsman on its product page, or give one of our sales representatives a call. They will be happy to help you with your purchase, or to find a suitable replacement for the Scotsman NU130.

If you are in the unfortunate crowd, and once again missed the opportunity to purchase one of Scotsman’s NU130s, do not worry – you are not alone and you have other options. Ice-O-Matic, (who is owned by Scotsman) offers the GEMU090- an undercounter ice machine identical in size and stature to the NU130. The only difference between the two is that the GEMU090 produces less ice per day at 85 pounds. Otherwise, the GEMU090 from Ice-O-Matic is nearly a carbon copy of the NU130. Scotsman provides a few countertop ice maker dispenser options that produce nugget ice in greater quantities too. The MDT2C12A and MDT5N25A are essentially “do-it-all” ice machines that make ice, dispense ice, and dispense water. They both operate via a sensor as well, making them very sanitary options if the ice machine will be used by a multitude of people.

  7. Prepare the Patio with an Outdoor Ice Maker

It may not feel like it depending where you live, but summer really is right around the corner. April is here, and soon too will suntans, summer days, and weekend barbecues be here. The sights, sounds, and smells of summer events are a mere moment away, and unless you have an outdoor ice maker, you probably aren’t adequately prepared to host a proper party! What separates a excellent event from an average one is often the quality of the food and drinks, and no one ever raves about a party that serves a warm margarita on a hot summer day. To properly prepare you or summer, we decided to highlight the best outdoor ice makers available at Ice Machines Plus so you can find the right one for your next event.

All of the following ice makers have been approved for outdoor use: Ice-O-Matic’s popular GEMU090, Hoshizaki’s AM-50BAE and C-100BAF, and U-Line’s BI95, BI98, CO29, and the ADA15IMS. They are available in different sizes (some are meet ADA height requirements), make varying amounts of ice, and create four different ice styles.  Finding the right outdoor ice maker should be a simple task after reading these reviews. Not a reader? We tried to sum up this article in the image below if that's more your preference.

Ice Makers Approved for Outdoor Use

    Ice-O-Matic GEMU090

If you’ve searched for an undercounter ice maker in the past, you may be familiar with the Ice-O-Matic GEMU090 already, as it is one of the more undercounter ice makers available. This ice maker creates Ice-O-Matic’s Pearl Ice (also called nugget ice), the same ice served at fast food chains like Sonic and Zaxby’s. It is soft, chewable, and has the ability to retain the flavors of the beverages it cools. Nugget ice also blends easily, making it perfect for frozen summer beverages. Ice-O-Matic’s GEMU090 makes up to 85 pounds of ice per day, and stores 22 pounds in its self-contained bin. It requires only a water line and a 115V outlet to create ice. The GEMU090 also measures less than 34 inches tall and less than 15 inches wide. It takes in and releases air from the front so it requires no side clearance, making it easy to find room for the GEMU090 to operate, whether placed inside or outside.

    Hoshizaki C-100BAF*

Like Ice-O-Matic’s GEMU090, the C-100BAF also creates nugget style ice (called cubelet ice by Hoshizaki). Its dimensions are almost identical to the GEMU090 as well, but the Hoshizaki C-100BAF provides a few unique benefits that Ice-O-Matic’s outdoor ice maker does not. The C-100BAF creates more ice per day, at 92 pounds. It also creates ice slightly more consistently when air and water temperatures increase – an extra benefit if you live in a warmer climate. The C-100BAF is most famous for its door overlay system, as the door can be affixed with custom cabinetry of your choosing. This allows customization options for those who own this outdoor ice maker. Hoshizaki also provides a C-100BAF that complies with ADA height requirements, measuring less than 32 inches tall.

    Hoshizaki AM-50BAE*

It terms of style and stature, the AM-50BAE is identical to the C-100BAF. The AM-50BAE can be outfitted with the same custom cabinetry, and an ADA qualified model is available. The difference between the two is the style of ice created. The AM-50BAE makes elegant gourmet ice (called top hat by Hoshizaki), and can create up to 55 pounds of this ice per day. The bin stores 22 pounds of ice when filled to capacity. This ice is hard, slow melting, and unlike nugget ice, is comprised almost entirely of water. In the freezing process, nearly all air and impurities are eliminated- leaving you with solid, high quality ice cubes (hence the name gourmet ice). This ice is a great option as it lasts long and melts slowly so as to not water down your beverages. Gourmet ice is the best choice for scotches, whiskeys, and other spirits that are enjoyed “on the rocks”.

*Hoshizaki models available with the door system are labeled with the suffix –DS. ADA approved models are labeled with the suffix AD. An ADA approved outdoor ice maker with a door system show the suffix –ADDS.

    U-Line BI95,BI98

These two ice machines are a good fit for those that require lesser amounts of ice on a daily basis as the BI95 creates around 23 pounds of ice per day, and the BI98 creates 25. These outdoor approved ice makers make U-Line’s signature crescent ice – which is similar to the ice made in most refrigerators at home. They are similar to each other in size as the BI95 measures less than 25 inches tall and the BI98 stands just three inches taller. Both of these outdoor ice makers meet ADA height requirements. The biggest difference between the U-Line BI95 and the BI98 are their storage capacities. The BI95 holds up to 12 pounds of ice when filled to capacity while the BI98 can hold an entire day’s ice creation at 25 pounds. The BI95 and BI98 require only a 110V electrical outlet to operate, along with a water line. Both are very conservative when it comes to electrical and water use as well, requiring only three gallons of water to make 25 gallons of ice. The door of the BI95 and BI98 is field reversible as well, allowing you to make adjustments if a change is ever required when the ice maker is in your possession. The BI95 and BI98 are available in either a black or white vinyl textured cabinet, to fit in with or stand out from existing appliances.

    U-Line CO29

The CO29 from U-Line provides two great conveniences in an outdoor environment. Not only is it an ice maker, but it also provides 2.1 cubic feet of refrigerated storage space. This way, all of your ice and refrigerated goods can be stored conveniently in one place. You are no longer required to retreat to the house for cold food or beverages. The CO29 uses the same amount of water and electricity in the ice making process as the previous U-Line models, but it makes only 18 pounds of ice per day, and stores 13 when filled to capacity. If you’re looking for an outdoor ice maker with the added convenience of a built in refrigerator, the U-Line CO29 is an excellent choice.  It is available in black or white vinyl, and stands 28.5 inches high while measuring just under 21 inches wide, allowing it to fit easily in areas with spatial limitations.

    U-Line ADA15IMS

While the U-Line ADA15IMS makes up to 25 pounds of ice per day, and can store 25 pounds of ice in its self-contained bin, it is a bit different from the BI98. The ADA15IMS is available with a stainless steel wrapped door for added protection against wear and tear. A black vinyl model is available as well, with a field reversible door, as the stainless steel door of the ADA15IMS must be designated as left or right before it is purchased. Like many U-Line models, the ADA15IMS does not require a drain to operate effectively, simply a 110V outlet, and a water supply.

Caring For Your Outdoor Ice Maker

If you own an ice maker approved for outdoor use, it is important that you take care of it properly. Your outdoor ice maker should not be left in direct sunlight. Heat from the sun will reduce your ice maker’s ice making capabilities, and can also wreak havoc on the plastic components of the unit. An elevated, cool, dry, shaded area provides a far better area for operation, as water or puddles can also cause machine malfunction. The water line that carries water to your ice machine should also be protected from direct sunlight, and should provide UV protection. It should also be rated to carry potable water safely. Ice-O-Matic recommends the use of copper tubing. If temperatures fall below freezing and your ice maker is forced to operate consistently outside the specified temperature ranges listed in your owner’s manual, serious damage may occur, and often this damage is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Most outdoor ice makers are designed to operate between 50 and 100 degrees, although ice production levels may fall when air temperatures increase past 70 degrees and water temperatures rise above 50 degrees.  The information provided above will help you make sure your outdoor ice maker lives a long, productive life.

With summer fast approaching, be sure to place your order before the first heat wave. Relaxing in the shade or by the pool on a warm afternoon is complemented perfectly by the ice from your own personal outdoor ice maker. Give us a call for more information regarding these outdoor ice makers, or any other ice makers for your home.
